A B O U T

What is American Modern American? Simply put, it is the combination of two synergistic sets of interests:

American Modern
[A term that defines the period of architecture and design in the United States from the end of World War II through 1970 which resulted in work that was unique, revolutionary, controversial, and--most importantly--indigenous. Also describes forward-thinking practitioners who have helped evolve American architecture and design since that time.]

+

Modern American
[The belief 1. in the enrichment of the senses through artistic appreciation and expression 2. in the enrichment of the person through consistently new sociocultural interactions 3. in the need to live and congregate in urban environments 4. that America is a wonderfully exciting, unique, and fascinating, though fragmented, place to live, whose disharmonies and contradictions provide endless opportunities for change, improvement and regrowth.]

The blog itself is a means to communicate how these ideas work in conjunction.

[What makes this space compelling for these people?]

Much of the content will relate to my own personal interests as a student and practitioner of architecture. Though I have a deep appreciation for history and the effects that existing buildings have on the real, actual, physical form of a city and the psychology of its inhabitants, I don't often dwell on potentials (potential of urbanism, form, technology, etc.) but this likely will change as I learn, share, communicate, and collaborate with all of you. I've also relocated to Los Angeles, the quintessential modern American city, which, even without school, could furnish all the talking points I'd ever have the strength or time to broach. Additionally, along with current topics and trends in design education/discourse and profiles of works I've visited from around the country, I will be posting my own personal design projects, so feel free to praise, critique, criticize, admonish...whatever you feel is appropriate.

Sharing is my passion and I hope you gain something from my experiences. If not, well then that's cool too. Who am I to argue?

Thanks for reading everyone,

-JD

[Cheers! Haha...]
